Europe's leading energy futures and options exchange and the second largest in the world.The IPE provides a highly regulated market place where industry participants can manage their exposure to highly volatile energy prices. The Chicago Mercantile Exchange (or Merc) was called the Chicago Butter and Egg Board until 1919 and is one of the world's largest futures exchanges. Overall the Chicago Board of Trade is probably bigger in number of contracts traded per year, but the Merc is bigger when it comes to agricultural futures and 'open interest' contracts.
