Short

1. Used with "sell" or "sale," this means that the seller does not currently have the thing being sold, but intends to aquire it on the market prior to making delivery. 2. Used by itself as a verb, it means to sell short, as "to short a currency," meaning to sell it forward in anticipation that its value on the spot market will fall.

In particular, when prices of a stock or commodity futures contracts start to move up sharply and many traders with short positions are forced to buy stocks or commodities in order to cover their positions and prevent (limit) losses.
