Sickness benefit

A benefit payable by the state to employed people who become sick and unable to work for more than three days and are not entitled to statutory sick pay (payment by the employer for the first eight weeks of sickness). Where employers pay their employees statutory sick pay, the state benefit becomes applicable if the illness continues beyond the eight week period. The extent of the benefit is dependent on the person's national insurance contributions and the maximum benefit period is 28 weeks. Sickness benefit is not taxable.
